Show the love brooch

You will need to bring sewing needles, a few pins, pen & pencil, scissors for cardboard & fabric, Pritt stick or double-sided tape.
To-days contribution will be £1 to craft fund.

You will be supplied with all the materials required, however, if you favour a particular piece of green fabric it needs to be 4” square.
On the day select one of each of the following – cardboard heart/template, piece of fabric, piece of fleece, felt backing, Pellon banner & safety pin.

DSCF5211

1 – Cut out the cardboard heart template.

2 – Using this shape draw the heart on the wrong side of your fabric. You will need to be able to cut a 1/2” seam allowance around this, so plan for space. You may also wish to place the template to take advantage of the printed design. (see samples) Cut out the enlarged heart and snip into the top V of the fabric almost to the drawn line. Put to one side.

3 – Again using the template draw the shape on the backing felt. Cut this out on the marked line. Leave to the side.

4 – Using glue stick or doubled-sided tape stick the cardboard heart onto the fleece. Now cut the fleece to the exact shape and place on the side. You now have 3 heart shapes waiting to be assembled.
5 – Taking the front fabric & a contrasting thread, stitch along the drawn heart outline. This is so that the shape can be seen on the right side for placement and assembly. We shall be removing this thread later.

6 – Carefully cut out the banner and position on the front of the fabric. Again placement may be varied to optimise your fabric design (see samples). Pin in place and stitch with neat, even running stitch using black thread just inside the top & bottom edges of the banner. Your stitching needs to be within the heart shape; this will not necessarily be to the end of the banner. ( Again refer to samples as needed)

7 – With matching thread and starting at the bottom point, run a small gathering thread around the edge of the heart fabric, going straight across the top where you have snipped.

8 – Place the cardboard template, fleece downwards, onto the wrong side of the fabric. Align with stitched and drawn lines; pull up the gathering thread and enclose the heart shape. Use the thread to secure this shape with a few stitches at the point. The top of the heart can be neatened later when adding the backing.

9 – Sew the pin onto the felt. Sew this as high as possible and the brooch will sit nicely when worn.
10 – Pin the felt into the gathered fabric and slip stitch in place, manipulating the top V and defining that shape as you sew. Now you can remove the contrasting edge thread.

11 – Carefully write your preferred environmental campaign in the banner.
