This is just one of 12 postbox toppers that are suddenly appearing about Horsham. So far they may be found in Clarence Road, Chesworth Close, Highwood village, Bartholomew Road, Rushams Road & Blackbridge Lane. There are more to come, so will you see them all.
Merry Christmas to all from Horsham Normandy WI.
A recent walk has revealed more toppers.
You may well recognise some of these locations and we hope you enjoy them whilst you are out & about. We understand there may yet be some mince pies to join the Christmas pudding. So keep looking out for them but make sure the elves don’t get to them first.
It’s encouraging that the joy of these toppers is being shared in the local press and on social media.
This is a new initiative for our WI. As well as being lots of fun and a great collaborative project we are fundraising for a local cause. If you are able, a donation to Horsham Matters Christmas Appeal will enable deserving local families to have a happier Christmas too https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/horsham-normandy-wi
To coincide with COP 26 some of our members decided to highlight some of the effects of Climate Change by Making the fabulous toppers shown in the photo’s.
Pam posted images of the toppers on several media platforms and the many responses were truly heart warming and encouraging. So also was the response to a quickly made topper placed in Market Square to coincide with Armistice Day and Remembrance Sunday.
We also had coverage in the County Times who gave us a very positive review..
On a less positive note, unfortunately two of the toppers were removed by person or persons unknown.
However this is not deterring the members who are currently working on Christmas themed toppers which is something to look forward to.
Horsham Normandy W.I .were keen to engage with the Big Green Week activities ( 18-26 Sept 2021) as part of the Climate Coalition.
We decided to create a couple of colourful displays to be seen about Horsham and whilst observing the social distancing requirements of early summer, we were occupied making colourful pompoms.
We used these to decorated the tree we had previously planted with in Horsham Parks, Human Nature Garden.
To interpret the various environmental campaigns of the W.I. we created some of the pompoms as birds and bees.
Other pompoms created a bright corner in the surrounding hedgerow.
Other members knitted a Climate Change scarf and temperature scale bunting to graphically illustrate the increasing temperatures of the U.K.
These were displayed in the library with an explanation of the W.I.’s concerns and engagement for our environment.
We are pleased that this display has drawn a positive response from the public and started a constructive conversation about the changes we can make for good.
As we are currently unable to make & distribute our emergency wash bags, Linda contacted Horizon Ward at Horsham Hospital, who told her that due to Covid restrictions and fewer visitors, patients often ran out of essential items and would be delighted to receive the donations.
Sadly due to the precautions Linda had to leave the donations by the door for collection.
Julia Keating, the daughter of a former member, kindly donated fabrics and trimmings from herlate mothers’ incredible volume of craft items. The images show a flavour of the fabrics and trimmings donated.
Beryl Harrison was a member of Horsham Normandy from 1988-2004and an avid crafter. I had the privilege of seeing some of her many pieces of work including quiltingand patchwork in her craft room, which was like an Aladdin’s cave for crafters.
Beryl’s name was not on our members tablecloth so her daughter added her name, which has now been embroidered onto the cloth.
Our thanks to Kath, our President, for collecting and storing this fabulous stash of goodies. We have plans to give the card making bits to our birthday card maker and some suitable fabrics & trimmings have been passed on to the team that make fidget mats that we give to care homes in our community.
We have further ideas about the use of the fabrics to make comfort quilts as group projects and again, these will be given to suitable causes in this locality.
The NFWI suggested we get together to take part in the “Great Get Together.” This annual event encourages us to come together and talk, to realise that we have more in common than divides us.
Horsham Normandy WI thought it would finally be a chance to meet in person after more than a year of social distancing.
A central, local venue, with lots of outside seating was agreed upon. The invites went out. The temperatures rose and rose but not to worry there was shelter from the sun, we would be protected.
The day before was damp, the rain had started, but we were assured that Friday would be better.
However, the rain arrived, in torrents.
But twenty members also arrived and had a great time. We were so grateful for those canopies which shielded us from the worst of the rain.
We had a wonderful time and agreed to do it again, very soon, but with less rain if possible next time.
On 11th June 2021 Pat R. and Kath S. delivered the knitting generously donated by members of Horsham Normandy to Beeding Ward, Special Care Baby Unit at Worthing Hospital.
The Items donated included:- 21 Blankets 23 Cardigans 78 Hats 4 pairs of bootees. Pat had been in contact with staff on Beeding Ward who said they would be delighted to receive any of the knitting we had available.
and the receptionist who received the bags of knitting on behalf of Beeding Ward.
A big Thank You to all those who gave of their time to knit and donate the items which were warmly received by the receptionist with a “WOW” when she saw the bags.
Horsham Normandy WI hosted a meeting on Friday 26th March 2021 with our MP Jeremy Quin. There were 23 WI members including those from Barns Green and Itchingfield, Horsham North Heath, Trafalgar Treasures, Manning’s Heath, Southwater, Warnham, Warnham Evening, and Horsham Normandy Women’s Institutes in the Zoom meeting.
We were there to commemorate the # Show the Love campaign and ask questions about how the government is planning to reduce our carbon footprint and protect the environment. Jeremy stayed for nearly an hour responding to our questions and has promised to get back to us with those he could not answer. We are hopeful this is the start of a positive dialogue about how we can further protect our planet.
We were approached in February 2021 by Broadbridge Park Care Home and asked if we could provide a talk for International Women’s Day. Two of our members rose to the challenge; Anne R would create a new presentation and Pam T would provide the technical facility.
Anne’s talk concentrated on women, both national and local, who have done remarkable things but are under represented in history.
Mary Anning – fossil hunter
In order to protect the residents Anne R was unable to see them gathered in the lounge but we understand that her talk was very well received. We hope that it will be added to our programme in the future.
Whilst we were organising this event with Katie Polloway, we became aware that the Care Home has a specialised dementia unit and we offered a supply of our fidget mats.
Kath and Hazel delivered these one Friday afternoon. Although we were unable to go further than the foyer due to current restrictions we were made welcome and met several members of the care team. Photos were taken of the hand over of 11 matts and we have been duly thanked on their Facebook page. https://www.facebook.com/chbroadbridge

Thank you to all our ladies who provided the fabric, trims, bits & bobs that make these mats so successful. It’s good to have another local care facility that appreciates them.
