Remembrance Poppies

After months of crocheting and knitting we have joined with other WI members in the area to produce hundreds of poppies in assorted shades of red, white and purple.

Over 300 red poppy brooches were handed across to the Royal British Legion for sale from their shop in Horsham.

Many others were crafted into post box toppers to be seen about central Horsham. We have especially chosen post boxes that will line the route of the Remembrance Sunday march.

The large post box in Carfax features a serviceman looking towards our town war memorial.

At our November craft session we assembled the poppy cascade that will be seen on the Carfax postbox nearer November 11th.

The purple poppy represents all the animals killed in war. Animals like horses, dogs and pigeons were drafted into the war effort and those that wear the purple poppy feel that their service should be seen as equal to that of human service. Profits from the sale of purple poppies go to animal charities.

White poppies stand for remembrance of all victims of all wars. This includes wars still being fought. It includes people of all nationalities. It includes both civilians and armed services. Profits from the sale of white poppies are used to teach peace and reconciliation.
